I now live in the sunny Algarve (Portugal) where I still fly my rollers. I have had rollers since I was 12 years old. So this year I've had them for 45 years......another 5 and it'll be a half century. Some of you will know I wrote the roller book 'winners with spinners' which I nearly entitled '25 years with rollers - a complete waste of time' I sometimes think I need at least another lifetime before I will know anything about the damn things! I think George Mason and I are the longest serving members of the AERC, and I intend to continue until the brain turns to custard! Might not be too long now! I've always been a keen supporter of the AERC for lots of reasons....but perhaps the main reason is that it was the only club back in the early 70's that had competitions and was prepared to go anywhere in England to judge a kit. I lived in Lincoln then, and so the judge (that year 1972 it was Bob Brown) had to make a big detour to take in my kit. Anyhow I hope the club continues to thrive and continues long after I've left the hobby.....it would be great to be at its centenary celebration.....but 2067 is a bit of a stretch. I've kept pigeons for 31 years, since I was 7 years old. Never had a break from them. Started with Birmingham Rollers, then went into the show scene and have bred show rollers for 25 of those years. Also bred and showed English Short Faced Tumblers for many years, hand-reared every youngster, soppy and tame lovelies they are. My new breed are Limerick Tumblers, as well as my Show rollers. I do have flying rollers again, which I am enjoying very much indeedy. This is my second year with them, and I hope to have a go at competirion very soon. Take care Jo |
